• Sociologist Karl Mannheim argued that political generations are formed by what historical disruptions occur during their ‘plastic years.’

• An entire generation of Millennials entered their plastic years during the Bush era and experienced all the drawbacks of a deregulated government and a destroyed economy. This has shaped the vast majority of Millennials to lean far left on economic issues.

• While the Occupy movement may appear to have fizzled, the sentiment of economic unfairness runs strong with Millennials and will most likely influence their politics far into the future.

The great protest movements of history … did not expand in the shape of a simple rising arc of popular defiance. Rather, they began in a particular place, sputtered and subsided, only to re-emerge elsewhere in perhaps a different form…
