American Delusionism

• Most conservatives believe American Exceptionalism means that we have divinely ordained superiority over other nations.

• In fact, we have been exceptionally lucky. America was born rich: vast expanses of cheap land, moderate climate, rich soil, millions of immigrants, slave labor, and being separated from potential enemies by two oceans.

• America benefited greatly from foreign wars: conflicts between France and England helped us win independence and two world wars left us largely unscathed, giving us a big head start in the post-war boom.

Actual ways America is exceptional compared to other first-world countries:

• CEO pay
• Extreme income inequality
• Military spending
• High incarceration rates
• High murder rates
• High health care costs
• High infant mortality
• Low social spending
• High levels of child poverty
• Homelessness
